Parathyroid Disease
The parathyroid glans secrete a hormone that regulates the body's calcium levels. They do this by regulating reabsorption of calcium in your kidneys, absorption of calcium from the intestine, and breakdown of your bones to release calcium into your system. Hyperparathyroidism increases the rate of these processes and can lead to symptoms such as kidney stones, weak bones, abdominal pain, and psychosis. If you have experienced any of these symptoms, seek a consultation with a surgeon.

There are 4 parathyroid glands located within the neck. They develop usually embedded within the thyroid gland. Frequently one or two of these glands becomes functionally overactive causing too much parathyroid hormone to be secreted. This results in hypercalcemia. Hypercalcemia related to hyperparathyroidism is the most common reason a patient may need to speak with a surgeon. Although cancer can develop within a parathyroid gland, this is extremely rare. Regardless, if you have developed hyperparathyroidism or feel a new lump or nodule in your neck, seek out a surgical consultation.
